Workshops Available to International Schools

Attending to Equity through Instruction in the Bilingual Classroom (1 day)

In this bilingual workshop, participants will explore instructional planning for the bilingual classroom through an interactive analysis of instructional practices that elevate and honor emergent bilinguals’ assets.

Differentiation for Linguistically Diverse Students

English language learners need instruction that is differentiated to meet the needs unique to learning an additional language and grade appropriate content. Participants will approach the idea of differentiation of language from an asset-based perspective, recognizing that language learners bring many contributions to the school community. The Differentiation workshop is offered in three formats: webinar, 1-day and 2-day.

Educator Collaboration

Educator collaboration provides an overview of collaborative methods and structures for instruction and assessment. Utilizing WIDA tools, participants will explore and discuss language development meaning making through language use, the Four C’s of Collaboration, and collaborative structures that support shared responsibility of multilingual learners.

Engaging English Language Learners in Science (2 full days)

This interactive two-day workshop offers teachers of English Language Learners time to delve into combining English Language Development Standards and Science Practices. In collaborative groups of educators, we will develop a common understanding of academic language in a science and engineering environment.

Follow-up Reflection and Action Planning Webinar

This webinar allows participants to reflect on their learning from any WIDA foundational workshops to consider how they have implemented key ideas from that workshop into their current teaching and learning contexts. Participants will consider the strengths and areas of need for their local teaching and learning context and then use that information to develop an action plan and corresponding professional learning goals. The overall goal is for educators to leverage WIDA tools and resources in the development of their action plans, and reflect on best practices that will, in turn, provide equitable instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse students. 

Formative Language Assessment (2 full days)

This workshop explores formative assessment practices that focus students’ and teachers’ attention on English language development within the context of subject-area classrooms. The purpose is to prepare participants to incorporate new formative language assessment practices into their educational contexts.

Leading Schools for Language Learner Achievement (2 full days)

Educational leaders are key to improving academic language development and academic achievement for multilingual learners. The purpose of this workshop is for school leaders to reflect on their school’s policies and systems in order to craft a personal leadership action plan that promotes equitable educational opportunities for multilingual learners.

This bilingual workshop uses an interactive and hands on approach to introduce the theoretical and pedagogical foundations of the WIDA Spanish Language Development Framework. Participants will reflect on current practice to determine ways to apply the WIDA Standards and related tools, such as Las definiciones de desempeño, to inform instruction and assessment.

This webinar is designed to enhance participants’ lesson planning processes. Participants will examine seven essential elements that attend to the needs of English language learners. In particular, participants will focus on creating contexts for meaningful language use within settings that integrate content learning and academic language development.

Scaffolding Learning through Language

This workshop provides educators with a fresh look at how to engage multilingual learners in rigorous content area learning with a balance of challenge and support. The purpose of the workshop is to encourage educators to consider classroom practices that move multilingual learning forward and upward together within the content of meaningful experiences where learning is mediated through language.

WIDA MODEL Online Test Administration (1 full day)

This training is for test administrators of the WIDA MODEL (Measure of Developing English Language) Online. The WIDA MODEL is a series of English language proficiency assessments for Kindergarten through Grade 12. However, Kindergarten MODEL is only available in a paper kitformat. Educators can use MODEL as an identification /placement assessment for newly enrolled ELLs or as an interim progress monitoring assessment. Participants will learn how to administer, monitor, and score as applicable each language domain in the assessment.

WIDA MODEL Online Test Administration Webinar Series

This WIDA MODEL training webinar series is for educators who are preparing to administer the WIDA MODEL Online assessment for grades 1-12. WIDA MODEL can be used as an identification/placement assessment for newly enrolled ELLs or as an interim progress monitoring assessment. During this training, participants will learn how to administer and score each of the four domain assessments as well as how to navigate and perform key functions in the MODEL Online Test Administrator Interface.

WIDA Screener: Paper Test Administration (1 full day)

During this training, participants will work collaboratively to strengthen their understanding of the how to administer the assessment. This includes test administration beginning with the entry task, and then continuing to Path A or Path B. Particular attention will be given to the administration and scoring of speaking and writing sections of the assessment using practice items.
